Torquay, Brixham and Paignton. We love our Bay and there are so many beautiful open spaces that the parks and open spaces team take pride in looking after.
Nick is one of our lovely gardeners who works hard alongside the other members of the parks team to help keep Torbay looking lovely, and this is the story of his journey to get there…
Just over 1 year ago on the 14th September Nick signed up to PLUSS to carry out 4 weeks work experience, which is where his journey began, that 4 weeks work experience was with our very own gardening team, with very successful results…
We, along with PLUSS were so pleased with the work Nick was carrying out that it was decided that Nick should be kept on for longer and his 4 weeks work experience was turned into a six month traineeship which would take place over the coming months at 18 hours a week. Nick was pleased to accept and couldn’t wait to get started.
Before signing up to PLUSS and starting his journey with TOR2, Nick, for personal reasons, was out of work for 16 years, after previously working as a London gardener for 17 years, so you can imagine how excited we were to have Nicks skills added to our team.
After the six month traineeship came to an end it was clearly identifiable through Nicks hard work and commitment to gardening the grounds of Oldway Mansions that he was a valued member of the parks and open spaces team and his traineeship progressed into full time employment 🙂 So after 4 weeks work experience, and a six month traineeship Nick was ready to start his full time employment.
With his original traineeship Nicks role was to look after the gardens of Oldway Mansions along with the other gardeners based there. However, since starting with us his skills are being put to good use by working alongside other members of the team by covering the areas looked after by us in Brixham.
Nick has said that he is most defiantly enjoying his role and it has been a real learning curve:
I was a bit rusty to start with, but you never forget your skills and working with the TOR2 gardeners it has all fallen into place and has helped to build my confidence more and more everyday I would recommend others to follow the path I has taken through PLUSS.
Mark Ilsley the parks and open spaces service manager is thrilled to have Nick as part of his team and has said:
Nick has been a fantastic addition to the parks and open spaces team and although he has not been employed in gardening for a number of years, he has proved while working with the team during his traineeship that he has retained his enthusiasm for gardening. TOR2 continue to work with PLUSS in supporting people with a disability or health conditions into employment, whether this is through offering work experience or full time employment
Who are PLUSS? PLUSS are a social enterprise that support thousands of disabled people each year to achieve work and a career.
Nick is an important member of our team and we hope you enjoyed his story.
