Seagulls…they can be a right pain can’t they? Especially in the summer when they fly around trying to pinch your food out of your hand!
But, that is not the only time they get in the way. At the Torbay Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC) they become a nuisance trying to steal the food waste brought back for recycling, but what can we do about it?
Well, that is where this guy comes in….This is Nero a Gyr Peregrin Falcon, and he flies around the Paignton recycling centre, carrying out Falconry pest control.
The idea of falconry pest control is to scare the seagulls away (not kill them) to try and change their behaviour patterns.
Once Nero is up in the sky the seagulls see him as quite a big threat so they do not tend to stay around for to long.
You wouldn’t believe the height at which he can fly, he can get quite high up in the sky, up to 2000 feet!! He is really well trained though, so if he is needed to fly at a lower pitch he will stay quite close.
This is Nero and he is our TOR2 hero for keeping the skies clear of bin raiding ‘gulls.
